What Are Artist Trading Cards (ATC's)?In 1996-97 a new art culture sprang up which rejected the tradition of critiquing and pricing art. Swiss artist Vanci Stirnemann is hailed as the father of the movement that started when, inspired by sports trading cards, he created and showcased over a thousand Artist Trading Cards in a gallery in Zurich, Switzerland. He refused to sell the cards but offered to swap with anyone who brought in a card. A movement was born which eventually circled the globe. Quoted from Emu's ZineThere are only 2 rules with ATC's: they must be 2.5" x 3.5" (64 x 89 mm) and they cannot be sold - they must be traded! They are the same size as baseball and hockey trading cards but much more fun. On the back of your cards it's nice if you write: your name, location, ATC title and number (if it's part of an edition). Unique ATC's are one of a kind. If you make several exactly the same they are editions (1/8, 2/8, etc). Series are several made in the same theme. But this isn't the important part - the important part is the art! ATC's can be made from anything! Let your imagination run wild! Use your favorite crafting techniques! Most scrapbooking & cardmaking supplies can be used to create fabulous ATC's. And what a great way to use up scraps. You can also paint, draw, do digital ATC's, fabric ATC's - or a mix of these or any other technique you can dream up. If you're going to be mailing them make sure they are tough enough to arrive in good shape. Buy some transparent sleeves to slide them into to protect them and for storage. Many collectors are storing them in the 9 card sheets used by hockey & baseball card collectors. We have single transparent sleeves on order & are looking for the others. Another storage idea is to make an envelope yourself to store or give them in. Envelopes can be made from paper or vellum. There are ATC swaps going on in major cities around the world or they can be traded through the mail. You can contact other ATC traders online through swap sites or ATC yahoo groups. I've joined 2 groups: Artist Trading Cards and ATC World For inspiration do a search on google & you'll find so many cards, in so many designs - it's overwhelming! And if you're like me - so exciting and inspiring :-) See an error in this website? Let us know and receive a $5 Ecoupon.
