Accordian Book
Designed by Nicola Manning
Materials:
Instructions:
- Open up all folds and lay album out flat.
- Layered Painted Background:
- Drag shabby shutters ink pad across entire surface. Flip and repeat on other side.
- Drag peeled paint ink pad across entire surface. Flip and repeat on other side.
- Working one panel at time, quickly dab lettuce and butterscotch dabbers randomly. Take cardboard and drag across paint vertically, then horizontally to blend paint together. Repeat for each panel. Let dry. Flip and repeat on other side.
- At this point you may still have some of the base material showing through. Take cosmetic wedge and dab onto shabby shutters ink pad and cover these areas. Flip and repeat on other side.
- Now is a good time to lightly, with pencil, mark F and B on the front cover and back cover panels.
- Pocket panels:
- Fold all pockets back into position. Using papers, cover pockets or fill underside of die cut openings. Use serrated scissors to clip text from dictionary pages. With brown acrylic, paint dictionary word on panel and when dry outline with gold glitter gel pen. Attach pocket to panel with one brad in corner making sure prongs on reverse side are vertical. Add embellisments as desired. With stiff paintbrush, dip onto butterscotch dabber and drybrush around edges of pockets, dictionary text and on top of embellishments.
- Reverse side of pocket panels:
- Cut tape measure strips and attach to side and bottom of each panel, making sure to cover brad prongs. Clip, then tear rectangle pieces of cotton fabric and attach to centre of each panel. Make people by drawing faces on scrap paper, cutting out body shapes from Lynne Perrella's sepia solid paper and using magazine images for eyes, arms and legs.
- Inside front and back cover panels:
- Attach tape measure strip to bottom edge. Cut shapes for house and tree from papers and attach. Using brown acrylic, paint around shapes and add a door to house. Dip paintbrush on lettuce dabber to paint around tree. With black marker write poem. Dab spots with both dabbers onto the open background spaces. Paint a heart in top corner with brown and when dry use gold glitter gel pen to outline and write your initials inside heart.
- Finishing panels completed so far:
- With gold acrylic paint drybrush over all completed panels staying clear of faces but making sure to go over embellishments and everything else. Also go over all the folds between each collaged panel.
- Front and back cover:
- Cut straight-edged shapes from papers and completely collage each panel to resemble a crazy quilt pattern. Trim excess around edges and closure tab hole with x-acto knife. Using gold paint and fine paintbrush, simulate an embroidery stitch along the "seams" where your papers touch. I used a feather stitch. Attach embellishments to spine and front cover.
- When everything is finished and completely dry, use gold ink pad and drag along the edges of entire album, front and back, also covering the closure tab. Then spray entire album with a fixative, if desired.
- You can now put ATC’s or tags into your pockets and display on a shelf or mantle!
