First Place

Christmas Contest EntryChristmas Contest Entry
by Melinda Stolarek

The front of the card is pretty straight forward using Christmas Cheer for jolly old St. Nick at 4-1/2 inches (real dial size). Belt is black ribbon, buckle is Rangers Stickles Gold glue, beard of santa was run through my Big Shot with the Big Impressions Distressed # 2 plate, while being careful not to get his face too distressed. Face was done with watercolor pencils and a dove blender pen. Gloves and boots are hand painted on using black marker. Boots have Rangers Black Diamond glitter glue. The bottom of the coat, cuffs and pomp-pomp on the hat is Rangers Stickles Frosted Lace glue. Curves and curls on paper is done with a Cuttlebug Embossing folder run through my Big Shot, then sanded.

The inside of the card is a little more complicated and time consuming First I cut out a tree on card stock and used that as my base. I traced the cut out tree onto another piece white card stock. I placed a crease with a bone folder down the middle of the tree I just traced. Then I folded the card stock in half. Now the card is folded in half with the traced tree facing me. Next I cut 5 groves ONLY in the tree and then folded the newly cut folds to the right side of the card and then again to the left side of the card, both sides folded with the bone folder, once that was done, I just pushed the tree out to the other side and there you have it, your very own 3D Xmas tree. While the 3D tree was very easy to make, the decorating of the tree took a long time as I would apply one color of glue then let it dry before applying the next. I used Rangers Stickles Gold in the middle of the tree, Rangers Stickles Xmas Red as the red Christmas balls, Rangers Stickles Patina as the greenish balls on the tree, Rangers Stickles Diamond on the ends of the tree (doesn't show up well in the photo) and Rangers Stickles Green as the boarder. I added ribbon under the tree and a gold star sticker on top of the tree to finish it off.

Christmas Contest Entry
by Jan Williams
These are Christmas gifts Jan is giving to someone very lucky!

Materials:

  • 4-6 cork coasters (I bought mine at Goodwill, brand new in the box with a pattern for 50 cents)
  • Sanding Block
  • Baby Wipes
  • Electricians Silver Foil Tape
  • Tim Holtz Alcohol Inks (2 shades you like together)
  • Tim Holtz Alcohol Blending Solution
  • White felt square pads that fit to a block of wood with Velcro Loop Tape on it
  • Bold Solid stamp
  • Versamark Ink
  • Black Detail Embossing Powder
  • Modge Podge
  • 1" Sponge Brush
  • Bone Folder
  • Heat Tool

Instructions:

  • Lightly sand any pictures that may be on the store bought coasters, the tape will stick to the coaster better.
  • Using your Baby Wipes, wipe away all dust from sanding.
  • Take your Electricians Silver Foil Tape and start ripping pieces into all sorts of shapes and apply to the coaster. I found I could tear thin, long wiggly shapes that create a nice pattern. You could also create a woven look if you wish. The ideas are endless with this tape. Trim any excess tape from around the edges of the coaster.
  • Once the coasters if covered in the Electricians Tape take your bone folder and go over the entire coaster side to side and top to bottom to really press the tape in place.
  • Some edges may lift, not to worry just press back down.
  • Using 2 colors of Tim Holtz's Alcohol Inks (I used Terra Cotta and Copper) dab a few drops of your lightest color on the white felt that you have attached to the Velcro Loop Tape on a block of wood.
  • Start dabbing the ink all over the silver tape. Cover the coaster completely, be generous. Do not let the ink dry!!! Now add a few drops of your Alcohol Blending Solution to your felt pad and start to dab on the coaster (lightly) so it breaks up the ink to create wonderful patterns until you are satisfied. Let the ink dry completely.
  • Now that the first ink color is completely dry, lets go to the second color of ink. Change your white felt and use your second color (the darker shade) of alcohol ink and dab over entire coaster again, do not let the ink dry!!!! Now add a few drops of your Alcohol Blending Solution to your felt pad and start to dab on the coaster so it breaks up the ink to create wonderful patterns. Now let this second layer of ink dry completely. I left if overnight so that if any ink got under the edges of the tape it would be completely dry.
  • Now take your bold stamp of choice. I used my favorite butterfly by Penny Black and using my Versamark Pad stamped the butterfly on an angle in the center of the coaster.
  • Apply the detailed black embossing powder to coat the stamped image, tap off excess.
  • Make sure your heat tool is well heated before taking it to the coaster as it will melt the glue holding your Electricians Tape in place. Now heat the black embossing powder. I noticed that it did take a bit longer time to melt the embossing powder to the shiny point. I suggest doing this under a light so that you can see that the embossing powder is all melted. Let the coaster cool completely.
  • Your last step it to coat the coasters with the Mod Podge. Using your 1" foam brush (avoids brush marks on coasters) stroke the Mod Podge in a side to side and top to bottom motion so that if any little edges or points of the Electricians Tape have lifted this product will glue them down.
  • Let dry overnight and your coasters are complete and ready for gift giving.

Card - 5.5" x 4.25".

It is made using dark brown cardstock by Bazzill for the base. The Santa image is from The Stamp Shack and it was stamped in Versafine Sepia ink, which I just purchased from Stamp and Scrap Canada. It arrived on Tuesday in my mailbox. It is mounted onto a shimmery copper cardstock and then mounted again on really shiny gold cardstock. Unfortunately, it does not show up well in the scanned image. I then attached some burgundy ribbon to finish it off. Very simple.Oh yes, I used dementional glaze on the eyeglasses to make them pop out. Again, it looks better IRL.
