Packing Tape Transfers

Materials:

  • Picture from magazine, newspaper, collage sheet - printed with laser printer
  • Packing Tape
  • Scissors
  • Water
  • Dish

Instructions:

Pick a picture. You'll find some work better than others. I've had good luck with newspaper, photocopies and magazine pictures as well as some I've printed myself with a laser printer. Really glossy pictures don't work well.

Put tape on picture
Put tape on top of picture.

Trim off tape
Trim extra tape around picture.

Burnish
Burnish with a bone folder or the handle of your scissors.

Soak
Soak in a dish of water for 5 - 15 minutes. Some papers take longer than others. It should rub off easily. Transfers can be left to soak for several hours & still work.

Rub off paper
Carefully rub paper off tape. Image should be left on packing tape. If part of the paper comes off and the rest won't soak again.

Let the transfer dry & then use it in a project. Sometimes the tape will still be sticky & will hold. Sometimes it won't. Gel gloss works well to attach non sticky transfers.

Here's a couple projects Heather made using packing tape transfers:
